Le pub The Salutation s’honore d’une belle plaque mentionnant le s\u00e9jour en 1846 de Charlotte Bront\u00eb et de son p\u00e8re le r\u00e9v\u00e9rend au 59 Boundary Street West (\u00e0 l’\u00e9poque 83 Mount Pleasant). Ils arriv\u00e8rent le 19 ao\u00fbt pour que Patrick Bront\u00eb subisse une op\u00e9ration de la cataracte. Ils log\u00e8rent plusieurs jours dans ce qui est devenu un pub et \u00e9tait alors une sorte de pension de famille g\u00e9r\u00e9e par une ancienne employ\u00e9e de maison du Dr Wilson, l’ophtalmologiste consult\u00e9 par Patrick Bront\u00eb. Malade, cette femme ne put assurer le couvert pour \u00ab\u00a0Papa\u00a0\u00bb et Charlotte. Celle-ci (qui n’\u00e9tait pas aussi experte en la mati\u00e8re que sa s\u0153ur Emily) dut se mettre \u00e0 la cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Du 83 Mount Pleasant, Charlotte \u00e9crivit \u00e0 son amie Ellen Nussey : \u00ab\u00a0Dear Ellen, I just scribble a line to you to let you know where I am \u2013 in order that you may write to me here for it seems to me that a letter from you would relieve me from the feeling of strangeness I have in this town. Papa came here on Wednesday, we saw Mr Wilson the Oculist the same day, he pronounced papa\u2019s eyes quite ready for an operation and has fixed next Monday for the performance of it. Think of us on that day dear Nell. We got into our lodgings yesterday \u2013 I think we shall be comfortable, at least our rooms are very good, but there is no Mistress of the house (she is very ill and gone out into the country) and I am somewhat puzzled in managing about provisions. […] I wish you or your Sister Anne could give me some hints about how to manage [\u2026] papa\u2019s diet is so very simple \u2013 but there will be a nurse coming in a day or two \u2013 and I am afraid of not having things good enough for her \u2013 Papa requires nothing you know but plain beef & mutton, tea and bread and butter but a nurse will probably expect to live much better \u2013 give me some hints if you can.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dans son ouvrage magistral sur les Bront\u00ebs, Juliet Barker mentionne que John Robinson, un libraire, logea dans cette maison en 1845, ainsi que Thomas Bell, un \u00ab\u00a0agent\u00a0\u00bb, en 1847 (source : Slater, General and Classified Directory \u2026 of Manchester and Salford<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
