Le pub The Salutation s’honore d’une belle plaque mentionnant le séjour en 1846 de Charlotte Brontë et de son père le révérend au 59 Boundary Street West (à l’époque 83 Mount Pleasant). Ils arrivèrent le 19 août pour que Patrick Brontë subisse une opération de la cataracte. Ils logèrent plusieurs jours dans ce qui est devenu un pub et était alors une sorte de pension de famille gérée par une ancienne employée de maison du Dr Wilson, l’ophtalmologiste consulté par Patrick Brontë. Malade, cette femme ne put assurer le couvert pour « Papa » et Charlotte. Celle-ci (qui n’était pas aussi experte en la matière que sa sœur Emily) dut se mettre à la cuisine.
Du 83 Mount Pleasant, Charlotte écrivit à son amie Ellen Nussey : « Dear Ellen, I just scribble a line to you to let you know where I am – in order that you may write to me here for it seems to me that a letter from you would relieve me from the feeling of strangeness I have in this town. Papa came here on Wednesday, we saw Mr Wilson the Oculist the same day, he pronounced papa’s eyes quite ready for an operation and has fixed next Monday for the performance of it. Think of us on that day dear Nell. We got into our lodgings yesterday – I think we shall be comfortable, at least our rooms are very good, but there is no Mistress of the house (she is very ill and gone out into the country) and I am somewhat puzzled in managing about provisions. […] I wish you or your Sister Anne could give me some hints about how to manage […] papa’s diet is so very simple – but there will be a nurse coming in a day or two – and I am afraid of not having things good enough for her – Papa requires nothing you know but plain beef & mutton, tea and bread and butter but a nurse will probably expect to live much better – give me some hints if you can. »
Dans son ouvrage magistral sur les Brontës, Juliet Barker mentionne que John Robinson, un libraire, logea dans cette maison en 1845, ainsi que Thomas Bell, un « agent », en 1847 (source : Slater, General and Classified Directory … of Manchester and Salford).
